Success Story: Overcoming an RFE to Secure EB-1A Approval for a Robotics Expert Advancing Autonomous Systems
Client’s Testimonial:
“The team was highly professional throughout the process, communicated clearly at every stage, and was always timely and responsive to my questions and requests.”
On July 6th, 2026, we received another EB-1A (Alien of Extraordinary Ability) approval for a Postdoctoral Associate in the Field of Robotics (Approval Notice).
General Field: Robotics
Position at the Time of Case Filing: Postdoctoral Associate
Country of Origin: China
State of Residence at the Time of Filing: Michigan
Approval Notice Date: July 6th, 2026
Processing Time: 27 months, 7 days
Case Summary:
Reliable autonomous systems depend on machines being able to determine where they are, interpret their surroundings, and coordinate effectively with one another, including in environments where conventional navigation tools may be unavailable. This challenge has been central to the client’s work in robotics. With a Ph.D. in autonomous systems, the client has developed expertise in robotic systems, with research focused on improving the capabilities, reliability, and scalability of autonomous technologies. The client currently conducts research in the United States, developing and evaluating new methods to advance autonomous systems in complex environments.
North America Immigration Law Group (Chen Immigration Law Associates) prepared the client’s I-140 EB-1A petition around a broader pattern of sustained influence rather than relying on any single accomplishment. We demonstrated how the client’s research had produced methods that other researchers subsequently used as benchmarks, foundations, and technical resources for further work in robotics. This independent reliance was particularly important because it showed that the client’s contributions had moved beyond publication and were actively shaping subsequent research.
The client’s record provided several complementary indicators of this influence. The client authored 14 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, along with a preprint, and the research had accumulated 509 citations. At least seven publications ranked among the most highly cited engineering papers from their respective publication years, while the client ranked among the top 1% of highly cited engineering authors over the preceding seven years. The client had also completed over 60 peer reviews, demonstrating that research venues repeatedly entrusted the client with evaluating the work of other specialists.
Recognition extended beyond these quantitative indicators. One of the client’s research studies received a distinguished best paper award based on factors including originality, technical merit, potential field impact, and practical significance. The client also received recognition for outstanding peer-review service. In addition, the client’s research had been supported by major U.S. government research agencies. Together, these forms of recognition helped demonstrate that the client’s expertise had been independently evaluated and valued by researchers, publishers, and research sponsors.
The petition was further supported by 4 letters of recommendation, including three independent advisory opinions from experts who knew the client’s work through the research itself rather than through personal collaboration. Their perspectives helped connect the objective record to the client’s broader influence in robotics and corroborated how other specialists had relied upon the client’s contributions.
After receiving a Request for Evidence (RFE), the client ultimately secured I-140 EB-1A approval. The outcome reflects a record in which publication, citation, peer-review activity, recognized research contributions, competitive honors, and independent reliance reinforced one another. We are pleased to have supported the client through the RFE process and wish the client continued success in advancing reliable and autonomous technologies in the United States.
