Case Summary:

An expert in the field of medical science, our NIW (National Interest Waiver) client from South Korea had a proposed endeavor to continue her research on identifying the biomarkers and cognitive processes associated with chronic pain. Her work was aimed at developing improved methods for monitoring and treating chronic pain. This meant that her research is of great importance because it addresses a critical gap in the literature surrounding chronic pain and its treatment. Currently, the standard methods of chronic pain management are nearly the same as incidental pain management: NSAIDS, acetaminophen, opioids, and more occasional drugs not intended for long-term use.

Her previous experience researching neurological disorders, learning difficulties, cognition, and behavior regulation is invaluable to her current research focus on the mechanisms of chronic pain, as well as the effects of severe, long-term chronic pain on the body’s reward center.

We also noted that her proposed endeavor has broad implications for the United States, especially since the CDC has estimated that over 20% of American adults suffer from chronic pain. To put this into perspective, over 50 million Americans experience consistent pain great enough to impact their daily lives. Furthermore, treating chronic pain with opioids often leads to addiction and increased mortality, underscoring the dire need for improved treatments for this common condition. Our client has been pursuing research that directly enables the development of safer and more effective pain management strategies. It was due to this that the National Science Foundation (NSF) found it to be of national interest and supported her work with funding.

Her 2 years of research have resulted in 5 peer-reviewed journal articles (3 of them first-authored) which have been cited a total of 27 times according to Google Scholar.

These academic and professional successes helped us establish beyond reasonable doubt that she was indeed a researcher capable of furthering national interests and thus should be allowed to continue her work here in the United States. This is why she won the approval of the adjudicating bench in less than 4 months. The process was also smoothened by 4 letters of recommendation from other experts who found her work to be relevant to the country and the world.

We are proud to have worked with her and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
