Success Story: Advancing Smarter Autonomous Systems: NIW Approval After RFE for a Robotics Researcher
Client’s Testimonial:
“I really appreciate the service that Chen Immigration Attorneys provided. They were always proactive in responding to queries and clarifying things that were needed to make a strong case, and especially helpful during preparation of the RFE response. I had trouble keeping up with providing case materials in a timely manner in some cases, and they were patient enough to give me timely reminders on providing the documents from my side. I am satisfied with the outcome of my case and would recommend Chen Immigration Attorneys for other researchers in a similar scenario.”
On August 8th, 2026, we received another EB-2 NIW (National Interest Waiver) approval for a Graduate Research Assistant in the Field of Robotic Systems and Intelligent Perception (Approval Notice).
General Field: Robotic Systems and Intelligent Perception
Position at the Time of Case Filing: Graduate Research Assistant
Country of Origin: Bangladesh
State at the Time of Case Filing: Georgia
Approval Notice Date: August 8th, 2026
Processing Time: 6 months, 11 days (Premium Processing Upgrade Requested)
Case Summary:
Reliable autonomous systems must do more than process information quickly. They need to recognize changing conditions, combine information effectively, make appropriate decisions, and operate safely even when real-world environments become unpredictable. For one researcher in robotic systems and intelligent perception, addressing these challenges became the foundation of a successful I-140 EB-2 National Interest Waiver (NIW) petition that was approved after a Request for Evidence (RFE).
Building Intelligence Into Autonomous Technology
The client holds a master's degree and is currently conducting research at a U.S. university. The client’s work broadly focuses on developing intelligent methods that allow autonomous vehicles and robotic platforms to process information from different sensing sources and respond efficiently to their surroundings.
Rather than describing the highly specialized technical components of this research, we positioned the proposed endeavor around its broader objective of improving how autonomous technologies perceive their environments, navigate safely, use computing resources efficiently, and function reliably under challenging conditions.
This framing was particularly important to establishing national importance. We connected the client’s research to larger U.S. interests in transportation safety, energy-efficient autonomous technologies, and continued technological leadership. The petition also demonstrated that the client’s work relates to federally recognized critical and emerging technology areas, including robotics, autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, and advanced sensing. Research associated with the client’s endeavor had additionally received funding from a specialized research center through a public-private research partnership, reinforcing the broader interest in technological advances of this nature.
Evidence of Research Influence
To establish that the client was well positioned to continue this work, we presented a research record that included:
- 2 peer-reviewed journal articles, including 1 first-authored article
- 1 peer-reviewed conference article and 1 accepted peer-reviewed conference article
- 1 first-authored preprint
- 52 citations to the client’s published work
The significance of this evidence was not based simply on the numbers. We showed that independent researchers had actually engaged with the client’s work, including using one of the client’s approaches as a benchmark and drawing upon its methodology for other research applications. One of the client’s publications also ranked among the top 10% most cited papers in its category for its publication year. Together, this evidence helped demonstrate that the client’s work had generated measurable recognition and practical scholarly reliance beyond the client’s own research activities.
Expert Support for Continued Research
The petition was supported by 2 recommendation letters from experts familiar with the client’s accomplishments. These letters provided additional context for the client’s technical expertise, prior contributions, and capacity to continue advancing research in intelligent autonomous systems.
“Ultimately, [Client’s] findings ensure system resilience and safety while minimizing failures in adverse conditions like multi-agent settings by maintaining low-power perception accuracy.”
Following the RFE, the evidence presented the client’s record as more than a collection of publications and citations. It demonstrated a continuing research trajectory supported by independent scholarly reliance, external research interest, specialized technical training, and concrete plans for future work. This integrated record supported the client’s positioning to advance technologies with broader implications for safe, efficient, and reliable autonomous systems.
The client’s I-140 NIW petition was ultimately approved, marking an important step toward continuing research in an area with significant potential for U.S. technological advancement.
