Success Story: NIW Approved for a Singaporean Researcher Improving Evidence-Based Research in Youth Mental Health

Client’s Testimonial:

"I thought that the entire process was very well-organized and thorough. The Wenzo online platform contained a lot of helpful information and was easy to navigate. The messaging feature made communication with the legal team accessible and prompt. My petition letter was well-written by my attorney, even though they may not have a scientific background or training in clinical psychology."

On February 16th, 2025, we received another EB-2 NIW (National Interest Waiver) approval for a Postdoctoral Associate in the Field of Clinical Psychology (Approval Notice).

General Field: Clinical Psychology

Position at the Time of Case Filing: Postdoctoral Associate

Country of Origin: Singapore

State of Residence at the Time of Filing: Pennsylvania

Approval Notice Date: February 16th, 2025

Processing Time: 3 months, 30 days

Case Summary:

Youth self-harm and suicide have become one of the most urgent public health challenges in the United States. The numbers are sobering, but the clinical reality is even more complex: risk is not driven by a single factor. It emerges from interacting neurobiological, behavioral, and social mechanisms that can vary across subgroups, especially among sexual and gender minorities and treatment-resistant populations. This NIW case focused on a Singaporean clinical psychology researcher and a research agenda aimed at making that complexity actionable for prevention and treatment.

The proposed endeavor was defined as continuing work to identify the neurobiological and behavioral correlates and mechanisms associated with rising youth suicide rates, to inform more effective therapeutic strategies to mitigate self-harm.

North America Immigration Law Group (Chen Immigration Law Associates) positioned national importance around a straightforward logic: when a health crisis affects large numbers of young people, and when healthcare systems face constraints in prevention and treatment, research that improves risk identification and therapeutic targeting has broad public value.

Rather than relying on generalized statements, the petition tied the client’s research direction to how health systems actually improve outcomes: stronger risk models, clearer subgroup differentiation, and more evidence-informed interventions.

NAILG presented a converging set of indicators showing both expertise and peer reliance:

  • Advanced training: Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology
  • Peer-Review service: at least 40 reviews, demonstrating that journals relied on the client to evaluate others’ research quality and validity
  • Scholarly output: 16 peer-reviewed journal articles, 1 accepted journal article, 2 abstracts, and 1 accepted book chapter
  • Independent uptake: 316 citations, supporting that the client’s findings are being used and built upon by other researchers
Support letters reinforced that the client’s work is not just academically interesting but operationally relevant to mental healthcare delivery. One expert summarized the practical benefit clearly:

“The application of his work helps improve the capabilities of our national healthcare system and our mental health resources, enabling our nation's clinicians and professionals to treat psychiatric disorders with a greater degree of efficacy.”

Approval Outcome

We congratulate the client on this important milestone. NAILG is honored to have supported the presentation of a focused, evidence-based NIW narrative connecting rigorous clinical psychology research to an urgent national public health need.
